Block 91
Portland, OregonLocated at the northwest corner of the Oregon Square development, Block 91 will be an eleven story apartment building with ground floor retail that fronts both transit focused streets as well as a new public plaza. The 193 unit building complements the Lloyd District’s distinctive modern roots with an emphasis on pure geometries and a simplified color pallet of white and black.
We conceived the building’s form as three intersecting blocks arranged to allow sunlight into the central plaza and access to views of downtown. The middle block is set back to provide relief at the street edge and allow the six story datum from the building to the north to continue down the street. The center volume is “lifted” to define the building’s entrance as well as give visual access to the public plaza from the transit stop to the north. The pure volumes are then selectively eroded to provide amenity decks and unit balconies for the building’s residents.
A large south facing amenity deck on the 7th floor allows residents the opportunity to overlook the new public plaza at the base of the building and provides unparalleled views of downtown Portland to the west.
Following the successful Hassalo on Eighth development directly to the north, Block 91 will strive to achieve aggressive sustainability goals that include water reclamation and re-use, energy reduction with an emphasis on natural light and fresh air for residents. It is on target to achieve a LEED Platinum rating from the United States Green Building Council and follows the goals of the Lloyd Eco District.
